Call Loved Ones

Over Thanksgiving, we suggested calling and spending an hour talking with the grandparents. Phone calls are a great way to connect throughout the holiday season.

As the winter days get colder and darker, everyone may feel lonelier than normal. Old fashioned phone calls are a great way to build your kids’ social skills—and make grandma and grandpa happy, too. 

Are the grandparents good with their smartphones? Here’s a holiday twist: Have a video chat and virtual tour of the neighborhood Christmas lights. Let the kids point out all the neat decorations homes are sporting this year. 

Sharing love and laughter over the phone is never a bad choice. But over the holidays, it may be the best gift you get or give.

Create a Photo Collage

Your kids love selfies, don’t they? Use your smartphone to take pictures of you and your children making gifts, wrapping presents, decorating your tree and baking cookies. 

You can use a free program like Fotor Photo Editor or PicCollage to create sharable montages. Many of these apps are mobile-friendly, but we recommend taking the extra time to download the pictures to your computer. 

Encourage your children to help you choose images for your digital photo book. The memories you make together will be far more valuable than the pictures themselves. 

Get Family Fun on Video

Do you remember watching videos your parents recorded of your childhood? This year is a wonderful time to recreate that joy by recording your children.

Bundle up the family and head outside. Use your phone to take a video of your spouse and kids having a snowball fight, ice skating or making a snowman. Record them wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. (Hint: You can record and join the fun by using a selfie stick.) 

For good measure, belt out some Christmas carols. Use your phone to record your family singing holiday songs. We dare you to get the family dog barking or howling to the music!

Sharing holiday videos is sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face. And who knows? It may even spark some friendly competition with relatives and friends.

Gather ‘Round for a Video Dinner

We usually recommend that phones not be allowed at the dinner table. But we recognize that sometimes, parents need to make an exception to the rules. Holiday meals may be one of those times.

Set up Zoom on your phone. Prop up your device on the dinner table so everyone is in view. Remember, we’re hardwired to connect over food. All you need to do is be yourselves and pass the cranberry sauce.

Host a Tournament

Does your family love a good game of Words With Friends? Does board game night get pretty competitive? It’s time to plan the rematch. 

You can even get the extended family involved by hosting it virtually. The cousins, aunts and uncles are probably every bit as competitive as your kids are.

The kitchen is another great arena for holiday competitions. Host a virtual gingerbread house contest. Create and decorate intricate cookie snowflakes. Put on an appetizer extravaganza. Make relatives jealous by sending out photos of your tasty creations.

Just Jam

Nothing perks people up like a little song and dance. Pop on your favorite tunes and get everyone moving. The exercise will energize you, especially given that winter makes it tough to get outside.
